From 1936 to 1966, Victor Greens Negro Motorist Green Book listed thousands of Black-friendly businesses across the nation, enabling Black travelers to navigate the dangers of segregation and the Jim Crow South. During this era, Black patrons were denied service at many establishments, blocked from entering towns after dark, and suffered extreme violence at the hands of White supremacists. With a Green Book in hand, however, travelers could find friendly accommodations for all their needs. The Green Book was more than a guidebook—it represented both freedom and safety.

In Mississippi, there were 115 sites listed in the Green Book. Using this app, you can find each one and learn how the Black community fought back against Jim Crow laws. Explore the map to visit thriving Black business districts, discover neighborhood icons, and meet successful entrepreneurs.
